A recent article on indiewire talks about the new film “Gifted.” This film is directed by Mark Webb who is a very successful director. The article talks about how Webb has done lots of blockbusters in his time, but he was drawn to this script in particular because it brought him back to the reason why he loves cinema and film. This reason is because of characters. One of the actors in the film talks about why the film is so lovely to her. She says that the emotional stakes are something that Mark really cares about. I think this is what sets apart a lot of directors. Rather focusing strictly on the action of a film, it is important as a director to take time to know the characters and put more time into them.
